Meet Our Prom King & Queen for 2017! #GFPROM2017

Posted by Sun, May 21, 2017 @ 11:00 AM

Della Gillespie Mendenhal; We started this contest in 2011 as a fun way to us to see the end result with our Prom flowers. We enjoy making them so much and love seeing students pick up their flowers but hardly ever get to see these guys and gals all dolled up wearing said flowers! I didn't even know if anyone would bother with entering the contest! Honestly, every years as I print the fliers for this, I wonder if we'll get any contestants this year. But year after year, students surprise me with lots of entries and tons of support from friends and family! So, I want to thank our contestants from this year and from years past, for your support in Gillespie Florists by choosing us for your flower provider and for pleasantly surprising me each passing year with your participation!

We had some serious competition this year! With more entrants than ever, it was exhilarating to see all the positive comments and "likes" from friends and family of contestants!

Prom goers only needed to post their picture on our Facebook Place Page or they could use #GFPROM2017 on Instagram or twitter wearing our flowers! We then asked our social media followers to "Like" their favorite picture or make a positive comment about it to determine the winner.

We tally all likes and comments from the original post from the contestant as well as the picture we post in the King & Queen album.

We had several prom goers enter but there can be only one winner!

And the Winner is...

Olivia Carnagua‎ & Aaron Raymond won with a total of 227 likes/comments!

Olivia and Aaron each get a $25.00 gift card to Gillespie Florists and Olivia will be crowned with a tiara and flowers!

Spring is such a highly anticipated time of year that we thought it might be fun to highlight some of the fresh cut flowers that the season has to offer.  There are so many lovely blossoms to pick from in spring: daffodils, orchids, hyacinth and of course tulips to name a few.

tulips3Tulips - Tulips are the obvious favorite for spring! They come in a myriad of colors: near black purple, blues, reds, pinks, yellows, orange and even white.

Orchids - Orchids are ideal cut flowers as they last for up to a week and hold their shape. Available naturally in whites, greens and purples you can also find white ones dyed in all colors such as vibrant blue.hyacinth2

Hyacinth - Hyacinths have a similar look to lilacs (bunches of tiny flowers in white or purple) but tend to last much longer when cut. These beauties are also highly fragrant.  A great in season spring flower option!

Iris - Lovely iris are wonderful cut flowers that can last several days.  They are affordable and come in many colors.

Daffodil - Warm and happy daffodils are also excellent cut spring wedding flowers and come in yellows and whites.

We hope that you find this information helpful as you choose flowers to accent your special day. Remember roses are always available (in pretty much all colors) and can be incorporated into your seasonal flower arrangements.

One of the first things that brides and their families ask when contacting us about their wedding is, “How much do flowers cost”?

If only it were that simple.

The answer is that it varies widely by flower choice, design and seasonality.  We custom design each wedding to suit your individual wants and needs.  Because there are so many options out there, it’s difficult for us to even give you an idea without having first met with you to discuss your plans and preferences.  We call this meeting a wedding consultation and we recommend it for each and every family who’s planning a wedding.  Type of flowers and arrangements needed, colors, ribbon selections, accessory options and more will be discussed during your visit.  Before you depart, we allow you to tour our 500 square foot cooler to see the flowers up close and personal.  We are prepared to handle every aspect of your wedding including ceremony and reception décor, cake flowers and more.

After the consultation is complete, we will assemble a floral estimate for you to assist you as you continue to plan.   This estimate gives you a detailed explanation of each product and its’ cost.

If we have done our job right, the flowers and designs for your wedding will be as unique as you are.

If you are planning a wedding, plan to consult with Gillespie Florists!

Gillespie Florist Weddings - Winter Weddings

Posted by Sat, Feb 05, 2011 @ 05:48 PM

describe the image

Warm up to the idea of a winter wedding.

Despite the fact that everyone seems to get married in June, winter weddings can be terribly glamorous, warm and magical. With the right elements in place, a winter wedding can be a wonderland.   Read on for some ideas.

The Flowers

Decide whether you want to go for a silver and white elegant look, or celebrate the season with reds and greens. For those who like silver, look for dusty miller, silver-dollar eucalyptus, and baby blue eucalyptus, mixed with white flowers such as roses, football mums, crocus, lilies and stephanotis. If you're looking for a brighter bouquet, consider red roses with holly and pine-tree greenery. In season flowers such as tulips, roses, and ornamental berries generally will be less expensive choices.

The Décor

Decorate your tables with simple and inexpensive white poinsettias, or fill the room with light by arranging pillar candles on a bed of pine branches.  During the after-Christmas sales, stock up on strands of small white lights, then string them decoratively around doorways, over tables and on archways. Bright red cranberries in a bowl surrounding floating candles make an easy and inexpensive centerpiece.

The Favors

If you and most of your guests celebrate Christmas, an ornament makes a perfect favor. An inexpensive homemade favor is a pretty tin of spiced hot chocolate mix or hot cocoa mix with marshmallows.  Greet your guests with warm coffee or hot chocolate as soon as they come in the ceremony or reception site.

Also consider a holiday cookie cutter with a cookie recipe attached that says your names, wedding date, and "cut out for each other".

Gillespie Florists Weddings - What's new for 2011

Posted by Sat, Jan 15, 2011 @ 06:14 PM

Lacey Ring-Verbik

describe the imageValentine’s day is just around the corner and romance is in the air.  February is filled with red roses, diamond rings, chocolate and best of all proposals and engagements.  What comes after proposals and engagements…..that’s right, weddings!  This year promises to be an interesting one.  We’re already working hard and studying up on the latest and greatest trends for 2011.

What are some of those trends, you ask?

Here’s a sneak peak at some of the trends you can expect to see.

Bright, tropical and fun colors are in this year.  Apple green, hot pink, red, orange, yellow, slate grey, aged gold, emerald green and chocolate brown to name a few.

Say goodbye to over-the-top elegance and hello to a new era of “casual” traditional.

Grooms are going to assist in more of the wedding planning duties to ensure that the big day is a reflection of both people involved.

The Do It Yourself wedding scene will become mainstream. It’s normal for most brides to custom create at least one element of their wedding.

Family owned-heirlooms are becoming popular additions to wedding designs. One-of-a-kind becomes the “new black”.

Because of the popularity of Friday weddings, venues will likely increase their rental rates.

Keep an eye on our blog for more interesting designs and ideas.
