Among all the lovely flowers, the rose stands out as the top choice. Celebrated as the beloved flower of Venus, the goddess of Love, roses are in high demand worldwide. Yet, this surge in popularity prompts the question - why are roses so costly at this time of year? It's an intriguing question, and we have the answer ready for you!

One of the primary reasons roses are so pricey around Valentine's Day is their lengthy growth cycle. It takes a full sixty days for a rose bush to yield a mature bloom. To satisfy the high demand for Valentine's Day, growers face a tough choice in December—they must reduce the production of their current rose crop by harvesting them prematurely. This means they have to forgo a potentially good crop to make space for the roses needed for Valentine's Day. It's a risky decision, especially given the unpredictable nature of adverse weather conditions.

Moreover, growers encounter challenges because roses are perishable and space is limited. They can't store roses for long as they would wilt and become unsellable. Additionally, the increased cost of heating during winter and reduced daylight hours also drive up the price of roses. Ultimately, the grower determines the price of roses, which is elevated due to the crop reduction in December. This extra cost is then passed along each level of the market—from the grower to the wholesaler, to the florist, and finally to the customer.

Another element affecting the price of roses is transportation. Many roses are brought in from places like Ecuador, Colombia, and even from within the United States, such as California. As the demand for roses rises, so does the requirement for cargo space. This results in more vehicles on the roads and in the skies to deliver these sought-after flowers. The costs keep piling up—from reducing crops to meet Valentine's Day demand, to increasing the number of vehicles, and spending more on fuel.

It's not just Valentine's Day that drives up the demand for roses early in the year. Events like the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, and the Tournament of Roses parade also require an enormous quantity of roses. The average float in the Rose Parade uses about 160,000 flowers, underscoring the widespread appeal of roses.

We are starting off this quirky list with the happiest flower on earth! Go ahead and look upon gerbera daisies and try not to smile. It's a challenge!

Gerbera Crush is filled with fun brightly colored red gerbera daisies, red hybericum berries, and a swanky aspidistra leaf (also known as the cast-iron plant). Easy on the wallet and just the right size to enjoy it's beauty anywhere in the office or home!

The fine designers at Gillespie Florists start with a large 10” Gala vase and expertly design your bouquet with yellow lilies, bright blue delphinium, purple larkspur, vibrant orange carnations, blazing orange roses, truly yellow daisies, white monte casino, deep red mini carnations, solidago and lush greenery! Wow! That's a mouthful isn't it? Speaking of mouths, this bouquet is a jawdropper. One cannot see the intensity of the colorful florals and not be blown away...in my humble opinion.

Maybe it's the name of the bouquet or the fact it is the most cheerful mixture of lavender and pink! Sweet Annie is overflowing with sweet lavender daisies, delightful pink alstroemeria lilies, fun dark pink carnations, and adorable waxflower. This bouquet is beyond darling and the corners of my mouth immediately raise because it's so darn sweet looking. It reminds me of springtime, young love, laughter, and sunshine. Looking for something light, relaxed, and fun? Sweet Annie is your go-to.

2. Orchids Renoir

Give your valentine a taste of the tropics with this new arrangement for 2016! Orchids Renoir is a modern design with a taste of the exotic with phalaenopsis orchid blooms. Three tea rose and waxflower blooms placed intermittently complete this work of art suspended in water gel beads! A subtle shade of pink decorative wire encircles the cylindrical vase for a striking finish. 

3. Te Amo

Say "I love You" with this breathetaking design which started out as a wedding bouquet translated into a vased arrangement. Between the vintage colors and the sophisticated blooms of hydrangea, roses, tea roses, and eucalyptus, this bouquet is a visual symphony which will make hearts sing.

If you haven't noticed, I lean towards non-traditional Valentine bouquets; the ones which do not have half dozen to a dozen roses in them.
