DIY Christmas Centerpiece Class

Posted by Sat, Nov 29, 2014 @ 11:03 AM

describe the imageLet the holiday cheer get into full gear! Our Thanksgiving feast is digesting so it's time in the Christmas season preparation we'll be investing!

This year while you are perfectly aligning the stockings to be hung and checking all your to-do lists twice, be sure to pencil in some fun time for yourself, a friend, and bring home your very own DIY Christmas Centerpiece!

ChristmasTraditionsYes, we had such fun with our "Giving Thanks" DIY Centerpiece class we decided to continue spreading the floral design cheer by offering two opportunities to get your DIY floral design on again, with Christmas! Please join us on one of the following dates:

Wednesday, December 10th

Wednesday, December 17th

Don't wait too late to register for the opportunity to create your own Christmas centerpiece.  Seating is 12 students per class; call us today, they fill up quick!

Perhaps you need a ladies night with your best friend, or maybe alittle mother/daughter time (yep, we welcome kids to the class as long as they are under your supervision), or maybe, just maybe you want to break out of the normal date night and do something different! Guys, from my point of view, if my husband asked if I wanted to attend the class, I would be thrilled. We would have some great laughs while taking a chance to do something different!

Did you miss out on the Thanksgiving class? Not quite sure you're ready to discover whether your green thumb is in working order or not? Don't worry! We have experienced designers on hand to help you! Not sure you know what you're doing? It's ok, neither do I.  Like I've mentioned before, I'm the florist's odd daughter. The one who makes designs with a keyboard and mouse. At some point however, if we want to grow we need to step out of the comfort zone and try new things.  I can see it now! The class in the design room with fresh cut pine and evergreen, rich in color carnations, and a design bowl just waiting to be filled with your creation.  There might even be holiday music in the background!

Are you sold yet? Are you ready to design?Call 317-273-1100 to reserve your seat! Payment will be taken before class begins. Hope to see you there!

Awestruck for Moonstruck Chocolate at Gillespie Florists

Posted by Wed, Nov 12, 2014 @ 07:56 AM

describe the imageI'm a big fan of chocolate; Strike that, HUGE fan of chocolate! Who isn't?  Believe it or not there are people out there who aren't that sweet on the smooth, delicious, melt-in-your mouth-properties of chocolate. It is completely fine to be a naysayer as there are some delectable confections of which I'm not too keen but today, friends, we are talking about chocolate. Not just any, but a new line which recently appeared on my doorstep combined with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. What better way to receive sweets than with a delightful floral display?  Take a guess which item lasted longer in my house. Are you curious on the brand of tantalizing truffle? Did I have you at the word "chocolate"? Yes? Awesome. Let's explore the luxurious line of "mmmm" inducing Moonstruck Chocolate Co.

moonstruckThe brief backstory on this chocolatier of artisan creations is the company originated in Portland, Oregon. They had a dream of making something beyond delicious and took it to the next level with intricate detail and design to their hand-crafted chocolates. Taking the utmost care and pride in their product, they use the finest ingrediants to create a one-of-a-kind sensational experience for not only your taste-buds, but for your eyes as well. After unwrapping the cellophane which encased two mysterious boxes I knew I was in for something excellent.
For starters, let's take a look at the sophistication in the package design. Metallic gold, dark navy, clean, simple graphics and font; my brain clicked with appreciation the box by itself!

moonstruckflowersAs the lid lifted from the box and the irresistable aroma hit and the battle of will versus want began. I didn't even have to taste these truffles to know they were going to be amazing; beyond amazing. A thin layer of metallic gold paper was all that stood between me and my tastebuds enjoying these edible works of art!  Finally, the paper was pulled back to reveal four delicate pieces of mouthwatering heaven. Ah, this was going to be tough choosing which one to sample first so I went to the description to narrow down my options from the dark chocolate collection: French Silk Chocolate Mousse, Raspberry Liqueur Truffle, Extra-Bittersweet Truffle, and the suprising Ocumarian Truffle! Tough choices there! I decided to save the Raspberry Liqueur Truffle to share with my husband (yes, I actually shared..but just one!) and went for the French Silk Chocolate Mousse. One small bite and I was hooked, line and sinker. A perfect combination of silky smooth center surrounded by rich dark chocolate with just a hint of bite. How on earth was I going to extend the enjoyment of these bite-sized delicacies without inhaling them all at once!

I tried desperately NOT to have another however my will was weak and two glorious bites later the Extra-Bittersweet Truffle disappeared. "I must save some for later, I must!" my brain encouraged. With the rich flavored ganache reverberating slight bitter tones on my tongue, I gently covered the remaining exquisitely decorated truffles; grabbed a stool and put the box in the back corner of the tallest cabinet while visions of sipping wine and nibbling on the extravagant Ocumarian Truffle danced in my mind.

A few hours later, my husband came home and I reluctantly shared my newfound love of Moonstruck Chocolate. After sharing the Raspberry Liqueur Truffle he had a better understanding why his half was a bit smaller than mine. Yes, I love this guy very much...however the siren call of dark chocolate is difficult to ignore.

Moral of the story is, Moonstruck Chocolate paired with a lovely bouquet is a wonderful surprise. Flowers make me feel special, loved, appreciated, adored, etc.; adding Moonstruck Chocolate to the equation? I was living in the lap of luxury; gazing at the beautiful blooms and enjoying decadent chocolates. It was a splendid experience I definitely recommend!

Halloween Bouquets, Fall Florals, and More!

Posted by Sat, Oct 25, 2014 @ 03:11 PM

describe the image

It's that time of year, friends! The most spooktacular event of October is eerily hovering in the distance. We've been waiting on pins and needles to sift through our cobweb captured boxes full of ghoulish decorations, terrifying costumes, and put our brewing schemes for horrific fun into action.

halloween 01October has always been my favorite month for the long awaited occasion of decking out the porch to beckon trick-or-treaters to come hither so I throw candy and marvel at creative costuming and adorable characters. But don't let the kids have all the fun! As adults we hold parties, make our own costumes, and swipe the hard-earned candy from our kids. Come on, if you're a parent, you're a candy-swiper. Admit it; it's for the children and you're helping the dentist protect little teeth from the candied indulgence of Halloween.

Short for  'All Hallows Eve' it initiates the three day celebration of Allhallowtide which is dedicated to remembering the dead. The traditional theme is using humor and ridicule to confront the power of death. Jack-o'-lanterns, costume parties, trick-or-treating, haunted houses are a few of the many ways we pay tribute to the day. We enjoy taking part of this good-spirited fun at Gillespie Florists with designing spooky fun arrangements. I thought I'd highlight a few of them today in hopes one of these will be sent my direction. Just kidding! Recently I received the most gorgeous, spilling-over-the-top, amazing arrangement along with a new line of candy we are carrying! Ok, enough candy talk! Let's see what our designers have up their mummified sleeves this year! The Eerie Spider bouquet  pictured above is a prime example of a few Halloween treats we will be exploring!

100 0902 rv

We do have some terrifying pieces to explore but will be leading in with something a bit more traditional with The Pumpkin Patch Deluxe! This arrangement celebrates the fall season with vibrant yellow sunflowers, burnt orange fall daisies, curling willow, wheat, and pumpkin accents in a ceramic container. It is a perfect centerpiece for a table overflowing with caramel apples, warm apple cider, pumpkin bread, apple crisp, turkey pumpkin get the picture! The beauty of this piece is not only having the fall season sprouting out of a pumpkin but also the longevity of the flowers used. It's a win-win!

describe the image

Continuing on with the pumpkin theme I will keep a pumpkin-shaped container and raise you with a keepsake steampunk light up Frankenstein's Monster head. The shocking orange fall daisies, poppy purple statice, and a smashing variety of greens bring this arrangement to life! Add in the steampunk flavor (who doesn't love springs, gears, and metals shaped into a monster?) and this piece is good to go in the family friendly fun category!

Haunted Skull

Call me biast, that's okay, I can handle it; I am loving the keepsake steampunk accents on our Halloween treats this year! Let's consider for a moment you may not have the real estate on the main table for an arrangement but still want to celebrate the spirit of the occasion on a smaller scale. The Haunted Skull is perfectly sized for a desk, nightstand, side table; pretty much anywhere!  The simplicity of the gerbera daisy with limonium in a poison bottle complements the light up steampunk skull. The tile ties everything together to complete the spooky display.

Autumn Elements

Speaking of displays, the last design on this snapshot of our Halloween and Fall collection is the sleek and sophisticated Autumn Elements. Colors of the season spike upwards out of a modern red rectangle vase. Belles of Ireland, carnations and gerberas mixed with fall leaves, pheasant feathers, and greenery create a stunning piece which will command attention where ever it is placed!

Gillespie Florists carries such a spectacular assortment of Halloween and fall bouquets it was truly difficult to narrow down to a select few to highlight! If any of these have picqued your interest or invaded your brain come stop by our shop or check out our website for seasonal treats! (No tricks, we promise!)

Mother's Day 2014 Specials!

Posted by Tue, May 06, 2014 @ 11:50 AM

describe the imageAlright kids! Mother's Day is coming up faster than a mom wiping the excess chocolate from her kids' outstretched hands as they are reaching for the freshly cleaned couch cushions for this weekends company!  In other words, the day dedicated to honoring moms everywhere is less than a week away...are you ready?  Got your gift or are you going to wait to the last minute and bribe your own kids into making a pretty card so you are off the hook? Oh my where on earth do these preposterous ideas come from? Of course you are ready! ...But if you're not, might I suggest checking out our Mother's Day Specials? We've got quite a few but if none of these catch your fancy, then be sure to stop by or shop online for a plethera of mom inspired bouquets!

mdblog 03

What's not to love on a spring night? Warm nights, fireflies dancing, freshly mown lawn, and the aromas of spring floating around the neighborhood.  Southern Evening encapsulates the mood with golden alstroemeria lilies, dark pink daisies, red mini-carnations, berries, and fresh greenery!

mdblog 04Another delightful arrangement dedicated to the arrival of the warmer seasons is heralded by the bold Song of Summer!

The red cube vase radiates warmth with beaming yellow solidago, graceful pale blue delphinium, pussy willow, vibrant carnations, lush variegated pittosporum and an adorable little blue bird that sits in a sparkling nest made of red wire! A perfect reminder of a warm summer day!

mdblog 02Of course, what is the promise of summer without the brilliant and bold sunflower?

Sapphire Shower is brimming with vibrant yellow sunflowers, delphinium as blue as sapphire, bright alstromeria lilies, yellow solidego, green hypericum berry, purple statice and soft green carnations! I would love to walk into my kitchen and see this sitting atop my island so I could enjoy it as I'm preparing dinner or sipping coffee before leaving for work in the morning.

mdblog 06Such a lovely collection of bouquets for Mother's Day it is difficult to choose just one! However for the sake of my husband I will narrow it down to this one (hint, hint ;) ).

Mother of Spring is graceful and elegant with soft pink carnations, delicate lavender larkspur, vibrant purple statice, feathery lavender fuji chrysanthemums, and intricate waxflower!  Surrounded by the beauty of this arrangement is a gorgeous, sparkling keepsake glitter angel...perhaps as a permanent reminder for the kids that mom is indeed an angel, even when she insists on the rooms getting cleaned and chores done before bedtime. Yes, I think a glittery angel will do the more complaints for sure!

Once again, these are a few of our many marvelous bouquets designed especially for Mother's Day to celebrate the ladies in our lives we look up to, admire, and love.
