From Something Blue to Cake for Later: The Sweet Side of Wedding Superstitions

Posted by Wed, Jul 08, 2026 @ 03:00 PM

KSBADGE_25-02Five Wedding Superstitions and the Sweet Stories Behind Them

Wedding days have a way of gathering up all the beautiful little things: flowers, family, happy tears, carefully chosen details, and at least a few traditions that have been passed down through the years.

Some couples love a good superstition. Some smile politely and skip right over them. Others pick the ones that feel sweet, meaningful, or just fun enough to make the day feel even more special.

From something blue tucked into the day to a bouquet sailing across the dance floor, many wedding traditions began as old beliefs meant to bring luck, love, prosperity, or protection to the couple. Some have stayed surprisingly strong, some have changed with the times, and some are simply fun little pieces of wedding history.

So without further “I do,” let’s take a look at five classic wedding superstitions and the stories behind them.

SAVETHECAKEMAIN

1. Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

This may be one of the most well-known wedding traditions, and for good reason. It is sentimental, easy to personalize, and just mysterious enough to feel special.

The full rhyme is:

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.”

Each piece carries its own bit of meaning. Something old represents continuity and connection to the past. Something new brings hope and optimism for the future. Something borrowed symbolizes the love and support of family or friends, while something blue traditionally represents faithfulness, love, and purity.

The silver sixpence is more of a British custom and was meant to bring prosperity and good fortune. These days, many couples skip the coin, especially if the shoes are not exactly sixpence-friendly, but the rest of the tradition is still a beautiful way to weave family, history, and personal meaning into the day.

And honestly, we love a tradition that gives people one more reason to tuck a sweet little detail into a bouquet, dress, pocket square, charm, ribbon, or keepsake.

2. Not Seeing Each Other Before the Ceremony

The idea that it is bad luck to see each other before the ceremony is one of those traditions that still comes up often during wedding planning.

Its origins are often linked to arranged marriages, when families worried the couple might change their minds if they saw each other too soon. Thankfully, modern weddings have moved far beyond that particular reasoning.

Today, this tradition is more about anticipation. Some couples love the emotional moment of seeing each other for the first time at the ceremony. The music begins, the flowers are in place, everyone turns, and the whole room seems to hold its breath for just a second.

Other couples choose a first look before the ceremony, and that can be just as magical. It gives them a quiet moment together before the celebration begins, and it can help make the rest of the day feel a little less rushed.

There is no wrong choice here. Whether the big reveal happens at the aisle or in a private garden before the ceremony, the meaning comes from the couple, not the superstition.

CLARABOUQUETTOSS

3. Tossing the Bouquet and Garter

The bouquet toss and garter toss have been part of wedding receptions for generations. Traditionally, catching the bouquet or garter meant you might be the next one headed down the aisle.

Is it scientifically accurate? Probably not.

Is it often funny, chaotic, and perfect for photos? Absolutely.

The bouquet toss has become one of those reception moments that can be as playful or as low-key as the couple wants. Some guests dive for it. Some guests avoid eye contact. Some bouquets are gently tossed, and others are launched with surprising force.

The garter toss has become less common at modern weddings, but some couples still enjoy keeping it as part of the celebration. Others skip it entirely or replace it with something that feels more like them.

That is the beauty of wedding traditions. You can keep the ones that bring joy, adjust the ones that need a modern twist, and leave behind anything that does not fit your day.

4. Carrying the Bride Over the Threshold

This tradition has a few different origin stories, and some are a little more dramatic than romantic.

One belief was that evil spirits waited at the threshold of the couple’s new home, and carrying the bride inside kept those spirits from entering through the soles of her feet. Another version comes from ancient Roman customs, where carrying the bride symbolized leaving one household and beginning a new life together.

A little spooky? Yes.

Still somehow charming after all these years? Also yes.

Today, carrying someone over the threshold is usually seen as a sweet or playful gesture rather than a serious attempt to dodge doorway ghosts. Like many old traditions, the meaning has softened over time. Couples can enjoy it, laugh about it, reinterpret it, or skip it completely.

After all, the best traditions are the ones that feel good in real life, not just on paper.

SAVECAKE

5. Saving the Top Layer of the Wedding Cake

Saving the top layer of the wedding cake is another tradition with deep roots.

In 19th-century England, wedding cakes were often rich fruitcakes made with ingredients that preserved well. The top layer was saved for a future celebration, usually the couple’s first anniversary or the christening of their first child.

Modern cakes are a little different. Buttercream, mousse fillings, delicate flavors, and freezer storage do not always make for a picture-perfect anniversary dessert. Still, many couples love the tradition and enjoy sharing that saved piece of cake one year later.

The secret is wrapping it carefully, freezing it properly, and hoping for the best. That, in itself, may be the real good luck.

For couples who prefer their cake fresh and their freezer space available, many bakeries now offer small anniversary cakes instead. Same sweet tradition, less risk of mystery freezer flavor.

Making Wedding Traditions Your Own

Wedding superstitions are part history, part symbolism, and part storytelling. They remind us that weddings have always been about more than one single day. They are about love, family, hope, beauty, and the little details people remember long after the music fades.

Whether you include something blue, plan a bouquet toss, save the cake, carry flowers with hidden meaning, or create a brand-new tradition of your own, the most meaningful pieces are the ones that feel true to you.

At Gillespie Florists, we love helping couples bring personality, beauty, and heart into their wedding flowers. From romantic bridal bouquets and lush centerpieces to ceremony flowers, reception designs, and meaningful floral details, our team is here to help your vision bloom.

July Birth Month Flower - Larkspur & Water Lily

Posted by Wed, Jul 01, 2026 @ 12:00 PM

KSBADGE_25-02July in Indiana brings sunshine, summer gatherings, backyard celebrations, and plenty of reasons to send something beautiful. It is also the perfect time to celebrate July birthdays with their official birth month flowers: larkspur and water lily.

These two blooms may look very different, but they both carry lovely meanings and plenty of fascinating history. Whether you are sending birthday wishes, celebrating a summer milestone, or simply brightening someone’s day, July’s birth flowers offer a beautiful way to make your gift feel personal and thoughtful.

LARKSPURFirst Up: Lovely Larkspur

Larkspur, also commonly known as delphinium, is a tall and graceful flower known for its beautiful clusters of blooms. You will often see larkspur in shades of blue, lavender, purple, pink, and white, making it a wonderful choice for adding height, color, and movement to floral arrangements.

Its name is said to come from the flower’s resemblance to a meadowlark’s claw, which is why it has also been called Lark’s Claw, Knight’s Spur, and Lark’s Heel.

Larkspur is often associated with positivity, dedication, an open heart, and lightness. That makes it a meaningful choice for July birthdays, cheerful celebrations, and heartfelt “thinking of you” gifts.

One important note: as beautiful as larkspur is, it should not be eaten and can be toxic to people and pets if ingested. Like many fresh flowers, it is best enjoyed in a vase and kept away from curious little hands and paws.

Larkspur Fun Facts

  • In Transylvania, larkspur was once planted near stables because people believed it helped protect against witches.
  • Native Americans used larkspur blooms to create dyes and repel insects.
  • George Washington even mentioned larkspur in his letters.

WaterLily

Next Up: Beautiful Water Lily

July’s secondary birth flower is the graceful water lily. Known for floating peacefully on the surface of ponds and water gardens, the water lily brings a calm, serene beauty to the summer season.

Water lilies are often associated with peace, purity, friendship, wisdom, and new beginnings. Their floating leaves also help shade the water, support aquatic wildlife, and add natural beauty to ponds and garden spaces.

While water lilies are not typically used in everyday floral arrangements the way larkspur and delphinium are, they are still a lovely part of July’s birth flower story and a beautiful symbol for summer birthdays.

Water Lily Trivia

  • Claude Monet was famously inspired by the water lilies in his Giverny garden and painted them more than 200 times.
  • The International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society was founded in 1984.
  • The water lily is the national flower of Bangladesh.

Celebrating July Birthdays with Flowers

There is so much to love about July’s birth flowers. Larkspur brings height, color, and cheerful meaning to fresh arrangements, while water lilies offer a peaceful reminder of beauty, calm, and new beginnings.

If you are celebrating someone with a July birthday, a bouquet featuring larkspur or delphinium is a thoughtful way to make their flowers feel extra personal. You can search for larkspur or delphinium arrangements on our website, request a custom design, or give us a call and let our team help you create something special.

At Gillespie Florists, we love helping you celebrate the people who matter most with flowers that feel meaningful, fresh, and full of heart.

4th of July Pet Safety Tips for a Calm, Happy Holiday

Posted by Sun, Jun 28, 2026 @ 05:00 PM

KSBADGE_25-02The 4th of July is full of cookouts, fireworks, family gatherings, and red, white, and blue fun. While it is an exciting holiday for us, it can be overwhelming and even unsafe for our furry family members.

At Gillespie Florists, we care about every member of your family, including the ones with paws. With a little planning ahead, you can help your pets stay safe, calm, and comfortable during the Independence Day festivities.

🐾 4th of July Pet Safety Tips

Keep Pets Indoors
Fireworks can be frightening for animals. Loud booms, bright flashes, and extra activity can cause stress and panic.

Before fireworks begin, bring pets indoors and set them up in a safe, quiet room. Close windows and curtains, and try calming music, white noise, or the TV to help soften outside sounds.

Update Identification
Before the holiday weekend, check your pet’s ID tags and microchip information. If they get startled and slip out the door, updated contact information can help bring them home quickly.
It is also a good idea to have a recent photo of your pet on hand, just in case.

Skip the Table Scraps
Cookout foods are not always safe for pets. Keep alcohol, chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, cooked bones, corn cobs, and overly fatty foods out of reach.

Want to include your pup in the celebration? Stick with pet-safe treats. We have Paw Street Bakery treats available at Gillespie Florists, making it easy to add something special for your favorite four-legged friend.

Create a Cozy Safe Space
Set up a calm retreat with your pet’s favorite bed, blanket, toys, or crate. Puzzle toys, chew toys, and treat-filled activities can also help keep them distracted when things get noisy.

Get Exercise in Early
Take your dog for a walk or enjoy some playtime earlier in the day, before fireworks and festivities pick up. A little extra movement can help them settle in for the evening.

Keep Fireworks and Sparklers Away
Fireworks and sparklers are not safe for pets. Even unused fireworks can contain harmful chemicals, and lit fireworks can cause serious injuries.

Glow sticks, citronella products, lighter fluid, matches, and grill tools should also be kept out of reach. After outdoor celebrations, check the yard for debris before letting pets back outside.

GIRLSFLAG
🎉 Pet-Friendly Ways to Celebrate

Want to include your pets safely? Try a few simple ideas:

Pet-Safe Treats: Offer treats made just for pets instead of sharing from the grill. A Paw Street Bakery treat is a sweet way to let your pup join the celebration safely.

Festive Accessories: A lightweight bandana or festive collar can add holiday spirit without making your pet uncomfortable.

Quiet-Time Activities: Puzzle toys, chew toys, and favorite comfort items can help pets feel calmer while fireworks are going on outside.

🐶 Helping Anxious Pets Feel More Comfortable

Some pets need a little extra support during fireworks season. If your pet has a history of anxiety, talk with your veterinarian before the holiday. They can help you decide whether calming supplements, anxiety wraps, pheromone products, or medication may be appropriate.

A calm room, familiar comfort items, background noise, and a little patience can make the night easier for everyone.

Celebrate Safely This 4th of July

The 4th of July is a wonderful time to gather with friends and family, and with a few simple precautions, you can help your pets stay safe and comfortable too.

And if you are celebrating with flowers, gifts, or a special treat for the pet lover in your life, Gillespie Florists is here to help.

10th & Raceway Roundabout Update: We’ve Got the Dirt! 🚧🌸

Posted by Tue, Jun 23, 2026 @ 09:00 AM

KSBADGE_25-02

If you’ve driven anywhere near our neck of the woods recently, you already know the area looks a bit like an obstacle course. With all the heavy machinery, orange barrels, and "Road Closed" signs right outside our doors at 10th Street and Raceway Road, it’s easy to wonder exactly what’s happening behind the barricades.

Well, we finally have the scoop from the town of Avon and the construction crew, and we wanted to share the latest update with our amazing community!

The Mystery Behind the Delay: The Plot Thickens!

Have you noticed things moving a little slower than expected out there? It turns out the construction crew ran into a bit of a surprise beneath the surface: a vintage, undocumented clay utility pipe! 🕵️‍♂️✨

Because it wasn't on any of the original maps, everything had to pause temporarily while the town drew up a brand-new relocation plan and waited for the official permits to get approved.

The good news? The paperwork is completely sorted, and the permit is officially in hand!

crane
What’s the New Timeline?

With the permits approved, full-scale construction is ready to kick into high gear. In fact, if you've driven past lately, you might have already spotted an excavator on-site and some of the new utility pipe delivered! The rest of the heavy materials are scheduled to arrive on site on Monday, June 22nd.

While the town is aiming to wrap things up by the end of August, building a brand-new roundabout from scratch typically takes about 90 to 100 days of active work. To be realistic and safe, we are expecting the intersection to remain closed into late summer or early fall

WeOPENYes, We Are COMPLETELY Open! 🚘📦

We cannot emphasize this enough: Gillespie Florists is fully operational, fully stocked, and ready to welcome you! Don't let those intimidating "Road Closed" signs scare you away. Because you are visiting a business within the construction zone, you are legally classified as "Local Traffic." That means you have the absolute green light to drive right past the initial barricades (whether you are coming from 10th & Country Club or Raceway & Rockville) to reach our parking lot.

  • The Daily Shift: While our open driveway has remained at the 10th Street entrance since construction began in March, active digging zones could cause this to shift. If the crew does switch our main access point to the Raceway Road entrance, we will immediately post an update on our social media pages to let you know before you head out!
  • Pro-Tip: If you ever feel uncertain about the "path of the hour," just give us a quick call at 317-273-1100 or text us at 317-509-0668 before you head out, and we’ll give you real-time navigation instructions!

We've Upgraded Your In-Store Experience ✨

We know that navigating detours takes a little extra effort right now, so we've made sure that once you pull into our lot, getting your fresh blooms is faster and easier than ever:

  • Ultra-Fast In-Store Checkout: Our main showroom is fully open, and our main counter is just a few steps past the foyer entrance. When you're ready to check out, head straight to our far west register for the speediest in-and-out service.
  • Seamless Curbside Pickup: Don't want to get out of the car? You don't have to! Just order online ahead of time or call us on your way. When you pull into our parking lot, call us at 317-273-1100, and one of our team members will run your flowers right out to your vehicle.
  • Let Us Do the Driving: If you want to skip the orange barrels entirely, remember that our delivery drivers are navigating these detours every single day. You can browse our full inventory and schedule a local delivery 24/7 at gillespieflorists.com.

Thank You, Indy! 💖

We are incredibly grateful for the patience, resilience, and loyalty you all have shown us throughout this construction maze. Infrastructure updates can be tough on small family businesses, but your smiles and continued support keep our shop blooming every single day.

Stop in, try out our far west register, or wave to us from a curbside pickup spot—we can't wait to see you!

Those “Road Closed” signs are intended for thru-traffic—drivers trying to pass through the area to reach another destination. If you are coming to visit us, you are considered local traffic, which means you are allowed to drive past the barricades to reach our shop and parking lot.

If it feels uncertain the first time, you’re not alone—but you are in the right place.

Which entrance should I use today?

Access may shift depending on active construction zones and crew activity.

As of March 24, 2026:

  • OPEN: 10th Street Entrance (best accessed by heading west from Country Club Road)
  • CLOSED: Raceway Road Entrance

Please note: this can change quickly. If one route is blocked, the other is typically your best alternative.

IMG_8028-1Are your hours still the same?

Yes—our regular business hours have not changed.
You can always check our most current hours on our website or give us a quick call if you’re unsure.

Can I still get delivery instead of coming in?

Absolutely—and it’s a great option while construction is ongoing.

If you’d prefer to avoid the area altogether, we recommend placing your order online or by phone. Our delivery team is navigating the detours daily and knows the surrounding routes better than anyone.

Flowers will still get where they need to go—beautifully and on time.

How can I get the most up-to-date route information?

Construction shifts quickly, and we’re happy to help you navigate it in real time.
