Oh to be Wed in the Winter: Top 5 Reasons for a Winter Wedding

Posted by Wed, Jan 15, 2014 @ 11:06 AM

Raw_badgetag-01-1.png"We live in Indiana..It will negate any reason you have"

It's true, our crazy and sporadic Indiana can be a deterrent for winter weddings. Does that mean you should let the unexpectedness of weather affect when your dream wedding should occur? Absolutely not! Inclement winter weather might mean you make extra preparations; such as add some long underwear to your wardrobe (not really if it's inside!) or have a plan "B" in place with your vendors and locations, but it can still be done, my friends! YES! Even in Indiana, you can have the most amazing, beautiful, creative winter wedding you've ever dreamed of.

When was my wedding? End of September... On the most beautiful day...and also Memorial Day weekend.  Again, doesn't matter WHEN you plan your special day. There will be obstacles one way or another.  Why am I writing about Winter Weddings when I didn't have one? Simple. I wanted to be married on my parents property during my most favorite time of year, Autumn. Now let's get back to winter and the many romantic, trendy, and cost effective properties it has to offer for those researching the pros and cons of doing a winter wedding.

winterflowers-1.jpg

Reason 1: It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Sound like song lyric? Yes, yes it is.You have the holidays, snuggling with your honey, love is in the air, everyone is joyful...What better time to celebrate your love and commitment than during the winter season. Holidays alittle too busy? That's ok. Winter season is from December through March. What better way to keep out of the post holiday blues than to have a wedding! We adults, we like to do stuff, go to events, and celebrate things! Give us something to celebrate after the holidays!

Reason 2: Location, Location, Locationdescribe the image

Peak wedding season is May, June, September, October. Many times weddings need planned 18 months in advance due to high demand of location during the peak wedding season. Off-Peak is January, February, and March. You are more likely to get your desired location of matrimony sooner if you go off peak.

Reason 3: Do You Like Discounts?

Added benefits to choosing off-season are vendor discounts from the location you choose for your wedding and reception to your honeymoon destination.
If you choose to do a wedding during holiday season, many venues will already be decked out to the nines in holiday decor, lights, etc which will save some funds in the decorating department.

Planning a trip to the tropics for your honeymoon? During the summer months is peak school holidays meaning you'll pay more, along with it being prime hurricane season in the Caribean. Hm...lower vacation pricing and less chance of hurricanes...sounds like a winner to me!

Reason 4: Don't Sweat it!describe the image

Peak season weddings are beautiful aren't they? Being outdoors, the sun in your eyes from every direction while the photographer tries to get in one more shot. Your extra strength deoderant you just applied an hour ago isn't holding up the way it advertised. A sideways glance at your maid/matron of honor...is her blush sliding off her face?! The guys fidgeting with their collars, flapping their arms and repeatedly checking in their jackets...What on earth could be...oh..that's right. It's a bit warm right now. Another beauty of winter is the temperature. It's cool and comfortable, the lighting is softer, and there is less likelihood of your flowers AND wedding party wilting throughout the afternoon and evening.

Reason 5: Themes in Abundancedescribe the image

There is something about winter which is intrinsically romantic. Perhaps it's the holidays, the cool temperature, the ambience of candle-lit rooms, the daylight fading into earlier evenings, the quiet nature lending to a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Oh the possibilities for theme during the winter months...  Will your colors be rich and luscious reflecting a more traditional and warm setting? Or maybe some cooler tones paired with metallics and sparkles which would accentuate the exciting chill of the season, a New Years flair. Or maybe Vintage! Steampunk! There are so many creative ways to celebrate your wedding in the winter. It's the perfect background for many themes.

These are just a few of many reasons why weddings in the winter are becoming more popular. Whether you choose winter, spring, summer or fall, Gillespie Florists will be delighted to help you with your floral arrangements, bouquets, table pieces, for your special day!

Nude Fashion - Weddings

Posted by Tue, Jun 25, 2013 @ 11:00 AM

Sarah Gillespie DyeOne of the most popular trends in fashion during the last several years has been flesh-tone, skin tone or nude colors.  At the on-set of this trend, I had difficulty sourcing flowers in these colors and often resorted to over-spraying flowers (lightly coating a flower with spray paint formulated for flowers).  Tinting flowers is not a bad practice, it’s just not one of my favorite techniques (the smell of the fumes and the uneven/inconsistent color are my top two reasons to stay away from paint). Centerpiece with quicksand roses As with any trend, the more mainstream it becomes, the more products are developed to meet the demand of the trend.  Lucky for florists and consumers alike, growers at the farm-level developed some wonderful options in flesh tones to accompany the nude fashion trend!

One of the most popular roses right now is Quicksand.  This beauty actually has a hint of very pale pink with a warm, sandy overtone.  I have seen this rose used in tandem with lavender, pale pink, peach and ivory for a subtle contrast.
Leonidas rose bridal bouquet - chocolate rose

A unique blend of mocha and ivory, Leonidas roses have been popular with autumn weddings for years.  The nude trend loves this rose, as seen in this bridal bouquet.
pale peach gerbera bridesmaid Pale peach has been around for quite a while.  One of my favorite pale peach roses is the aromatic Osiana rose.  One of my favorite Gerbera is Pacific, pictured here in a bridesmaid’s bouquet.

Chablis peach spray rose

Another pale peach option that I have designed corsages with recently is a miniature rose called Chablis. This unique spray rose is dominantly pale peach with hints of ivory at the base of the petal.

Vendela rose bridal bouqet

Vendela roses are a warm ivory tone, which I have working with for several years.  They are making an impact with the nude trend as a lighter, contrasting color.

Amnesia rose bridal lavender taupe

New on the scene, but trendy all the same, are Amnesia roses.  This unique lavender rose is very romantic with hints of taupe undertones.  Seen here with Antique hydrangea and pale pink roses, this combination hints at nude tones, without being completely colorless.

The Prom Flowers of the Vampire Diaries

Posted by Tue, May 14, 2013 @ 02:50 PM

Vampire Prom FlowersDella Mendenhall anything goes promEvery year I do a blog on the flowers of the Glee Prom but there is usually a prom on Glee by now. Vampire Diaries however has had a Prom this year with a great scene showing off some different Prom flower options!
Vampire hand tied prom flowers
If you do not watch Vampire Diaries, let me give you the 411 on what’s going on in this episode. The series follows the life of Elena, who falls in love with a 150+ year-old vampire named Stefan. Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Stefan's vicious older brother Damon Salvatore returns and eventually falls in love with Elena as well. The series is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia and includes other supernatural beings such as werewolves, witches, ghosts, and hybrids. Through a complicated series of events Elena is turned into a vampire and because of the death of her brother Jeremy, she “turns off” her emotions. In this episode, Stefan and Damon are convinced they can get Elena to turn on her emotions by taking her to Prom and reminding her of all of the good times in her life and showing her how many people still love and care about her.

sweetheart rose corsage vampireSince Stefan and Damon are over a hundred years old, it’s not surprising they take part in the time-honored tradition in bringing their prom date flowers (even though they are taking the same girl). Stefan gives Elena a hand tied bouquet (a.k.a. nosegay) of gerbera daisies and green roses. Even though her emotions are turned off, she does accept the bouquet. I think that is very telling of Elena true feelings toward Stefan because when Damon tries to give Elena a white rose with pink ribbon corsage; she tries to refuse it and not wear it. Of course if you know Damon, he won’t take “No” for an answer and with his super Vampire skills; he grabs Elena’s wrist and straps that corsage on her like her life depends on it! Elena does show up to prom with Damon’s corsage on and doesn’t have Stefan’s bouquet so, we could say that is very telling as well. But I’m on team Stefan so I am choosing to read more into Elena accepting the flowers from Stefan.

perfect corsage for vampire diaries
Pictured here is a three sweetheart rose corsage, that would be perfect for Elena to have worn in this episode! I don’t have a picture that looks like her corsage but hers had sweetheart roses and a keepsake bracelet so, I thought this one would be a good fit. By the way, I think it is great we are seeing keepsake bracelets on television! This corsage is called Angelina and includes pink sweetheart roses, white accent flower and pink bracelet.

boutonniere for a vampireLater in the show I noticed the character Matt had on a single white rose boutonniere. I wonder who got that for him? The witch Bonnie? The vampire Caroline? Or did he get one for himself? I’m just glad he was wearing one because I noticed Elena didn’t care enough to get her dates a boutonniere.  The Focus boutonniere is similar to the one Matt is wearing with it’s white rose and accent flower. I think it would have looked better on Matt because of the boutonniere holder it is in. Boutonniere holders are easier to use than pin-on ones and they have a cleaner look.

Vampire centerpieces diariesI love the centerpieces for the tables! They were fresh flowers with a lighted lamp in the center. I like how they combined two things people like to have in the center of the table and combined it instead of choosing one or the other. The bouquets included white lilies, purple stock, burgundy carnations, white buttons and accent flowers. A lot of schools choose not to have fresh flower centerpieces at their proms but we have a local high school that still does it and the kids love it! They keep the cost down by bring us their own containers and many times bring in items for us to include. This year they brought us party masks to include in the bouquet.

nosegay vampire prom diaries flowersCaroline, vampire and friend to Elena, left the Prom early because she was upset that she couldn’t spend her senior prom with her werewolf/vampire hybrid boyfriend, Tyler. She came home to set up for a party she was having later that night and there was Tyler waiting for her with a hand tied bouquet of flowers. This bouquet included lavender daisies, cushion pompons, alstroemeria lilies and solidego. It was very pretty and very sweet of him to bring.

Hopefully there won’t be vampires at your prom but there should be flowers! Go to our website to view our entire selection but clicking below!

Martha Stewart Does Not Work Here and That’s A Good Thing

Posted by Mon, Jun 25, 2012 @ 10:30 AM

sarah gillespieOver the years, Martha has given us scads of wonderful tips, tricks, recipes and ideas. Just like anyone or anything, you may not “buy in to” everything she has to offer, but overall, I think Martha has brought awareness to improving our home environments, making our homes warm and inviting.

One of the trends that Martha started several years ago was the tightly packed or “Martha” style bouquet. Although there is merit to this style of bouquet for specific occasions, I personally have grown tired of this costly arrangement and its mainstream influence.
 marthastewart.jpg

As a floral designer, one of my biggest complaints with this style is that the flowers are literally smashed together, with no space in between which causes the shattering or crushing of flower blooms. When looking at a tightly packed arrangement, I cannot help but feel that I am looking at a “blob” of colors and flowers, instead of appreciating each bloom. My belief is that each flower bloom should be appreciated for its own beauty and enjoyed by the eye. I very much oppose the crushing of flowers together for the sake of
style. I also enjoy the presence of lush greenery to contrast the color of each bloom along
with the added benefit of bringing a natural “feel” to the arrangement.
 airybouquets.jpg

On many occasions, my customers have ordered a packed style arrangement and have been shocked at the cost. Consumers are not always aware that tightly packed, round style arrangements require at least 50% more flowers to fill in the gaps of a traditional
arrangement. Using larger focal flowers can reduce the amount of stems required to design in packed style, however most desirable focal flowers are costly, which again increases the cost. Another downside to this trend is the elimination or under use of greenery. Beautiful garden style greenery can actually reduce the cost of many arrangements and add texture and interest to the bouquet.

The next time you are browsing the internet, watching television or looking in print media, observe the use of flowers in décor and/or special occasions. Do you see any traditional design styles such as equilateral triangle, radiating triangle, inverted “T”, scalene or vertical style arrangements? Probably not! Consider adding these styles to your repertoire of home or office décor. With the popularity of packed style
arrangements, these traditional designs would seem haute!

Prom Flowers That Glow!

Posted by Fri, May 04, 2012 @ 11:02 AM

Della Gillespie Mendenhall Glowing Prom Flowers? Is this for real? Yes, it is! We excited to introduce Galassia Flowers Fluorescence corsages into our prom collection!  This product enhances the natural beauty of flowers, and takes flower color to a new level by giving them a spectacular glow!

For their beauty to be revealed, they need ultra-violet (UV) light supplied by custom-designed illumination device and a specially formulated solution applied directly to the flowers.  These unique devices are imported from Adelaide, Australia- a city with a strong reputation in plant science research and development.  We are honored to be one of the few florists in the United States that can provide this product to our customers!  As a matter of fact, we learned about this product from networking with a florist in Las Vegas, Nevada.

galassiahowitworks.jpgGalassia Corsage - Lights on in lighted room!

How does it work?
First, we create a one of our signature corsages and design it on the Galassia bracelet with the lighted device attached. Next, we spray Galassia special formulation of fluorescence on the entire corsage. Then, when the big night arrives, the corsage is worn on the wrist, complete with an adjustable band.  The device has a convenient on/off switch so you can decide when to light up the room!

galassia_lightsoff.jpg
Galassia Corsage - Lights on in dark room!

The product works best in a dark room and produces a “black light” effect. The battery life is 6-8 hours but the formulation can last for months! The photos above are showing the same corsage in a lighted room and in a darkened room. Wow! What an amazing difference!

5 Easy Steps to Polyvore!

Posted by Fri, Feb 24, 2012 @ 04:44 PM

Della Gillespie MendenhallI am on the web all the time and have a number of sites and blogs I watch for new ideas and trends. One of which is Promflowers.blogspot.com. Recently they had a post about Pinterest and Polyvore. Though I like Pinterest, I really love, love, love Polyvore! If you are planning for your prom, THIS is the site to check out! You can find everything you need for Prom night and share it in one picture with your friends on any social network site! If you don’t know what you want to wear for Prom, Polyvore makes it easy to make several “sets” of options in different color schemes and styles which you can share with friends and ask their opinions.SoHo Prom look with flowers

How does Polyvore work? Here’s the 5 step process.

1. Create an Account. If you are already on Facebook, this will be really easy because Polyvore will let you sign up with Facebook. If not, it only takes a few minutes to create a new log-in.

2. Install Polyvore Clipper. Don’t worry, it’s easy! Go to This Page and click and drag the words “Clip to Polyvore” to your Bookmarks toolbar. There is even an instructional video on the page to help you get set up!

3. Import products that you like. For instance find a Prom dress online that you would like to create an entire look with. When you find your dress, click on the “Clip to Ployvore” bookmark and a small box will come up asking you to click on the image you would like to save. Click on the image and it will show up in the small box, ask you to select a price, tag it (i.e. dress) and check or un-check a box to quick share with friends! Click on the Save button and the box will let you know if that item was imported successfully.

My Prom Look with flowers corsage4. Create a Set. From the box you imported your first picture from, you are given the choice to continue “Clipping” or to “Create a Set”. Click on “Create a Set” and a new window opens to the Polyvore site in the Editor window. This is where you will see your newly imported picture and then there is a toolbar to the right where you can browse thousands of items other users have added to add to your set. If you are doing your own prom look, I would suggest searching for your shoes, necklace, earrings, corsage, dress, etc. If you don’t find what you are looking for on the Polyvore site, just get on the web, find it and import it. Just follow steps 3 & 4.

5. Share! Make sure that you have your favorite social networking site(s) connected so that Polyvore can automatically share with your friends. You may still want to share your sets directly on your best friend’s page so you can ask for their opinion! If you are on Pinterest, Make sure to “Pin” your set on your Prom ideas board!
