Paradise is always where love dwells.
~Jean Paul Richter

Whenever I think of the word "paradise" the tropics come to mind. Vibrant, exotic colored flowers, pineapples, palm trees, deliciously warm days, sunshine ever present. Thoughts of this lovely paradise make me feel peaceful, relaxed, and content. It's a wonderful feeling, kind of like when you press the pause button on every day life and reflect on the love you share with your partner. I'm not saying it's always paradise. It's hard work and can be tough at times, but it is also beautiful.  Flowers are a marvelous way to reflect the beauty and to add a tropical flair to this year's Valentine's Day collection; it came as no surprise to me.

15V01_Lowres

The tropical theme this year features exotic flowers such as: Bird of Paradise, Ginger, Heliconia, and Dendrobium Orchids. Where do all these striking flowers hail from in the tropics? Let's find out!

Bird of Paradise, otherwise known as the "crane flower", is native to South Africa and resembles brightly colored birds while in flight. It's petals are vibrant orange which contrast the blue tongue. In greenhouse-like conditions, these plants have the capability of blooming year round.

Seemingly akin to the crane flower is Heliconia, also known as "lobster claws" or "false bird-of-paradise". With similar orange coloring and thicker petals this species can be found across the tropical Americas. Heliconias need plenty of sunshine and moisture; they cannot tolerate drought weather. They bloom in vibrant hues of reds, oranges, yellows, and greens.

15V03_lowresDo you see the intense dark pink blooms in the bouquet to the right? The Dendrobium comes from a very large genus of orchids with over 1,200 species. Their habitats are diverse therefore the species can be found around much of Asia, the Philippines, Austrailia, Vietnam, New Guinea and many islands of the Pacific. These orchids carry leaves for the first one or two years and then flower on leafless canes.

Let's not forget about the Ginger! This herbaceous perennial is not only gorgeous to behold but also serves as a popular spice and medicine. Ginger is native to southern China and has become more prominent in the Spice Islands, Asia, the Caribbean, and West Africa. Ginger is often used in floral arrangments while the buds are hues of pink and white, before they bloom into yellow flowers. Their shape and texture is stunning, adding another layer of exotic quality when used.

Dakar_Blog

The combination of Birds of Paradise, Dendrobium Orchids, Ginger, along with tropical greenery thrown in creates an enticing bouquet. Much like love; these flowers are cultivated over time, attention, care, and diverse habitats. The result is magnificent, a work of art.

This Valentine's Day we invite you to send a taste of the tropics to your partner-in-crime, the love of your life, the one who completes you. Love is beautiful, what better way to show it than with flowers which reflect the beauty of life.

2015 Wedding Trends: In Lapis Luxury

Posted by Wed, Jan 28, 2015 @ 10:19 AM

kellybadgetag-01-3

The floral designers, wedding specialists, and staff of  Gillespie Florists
would like the pleasure of your attention and company for the refined and sophisticated description of the next top wedding trend for 2015:

Lapis Luxury.
weddings-01

Elegant, classy, sophisticated, urbane: these adjectives and many more found under the thesaurus when your fingers dance delicately over the keys to spell out the word "refined" and hit "enter". What else do these elite words of finery describe in terms of 2015's trends for wedding colors and themes? Rich and Luxurious. However, it doesn't have to be rich in expenditure: keep it simple with crisp clean lines, bold contrast in colors, and simplified table settings and centerpieces. Pure and pristine white with bold statement accent of blues inspired by waters of the world will reflect the classy and formal elements.

The flowers used for this sophisticated theme are nothing more than supreme in their stature and refinement as white calla lilies, roses, tulips, and peonies combined with the blue flowers of either hydrangea or delphinium are utilized. Centerpiece container colors range from white and blue to a mixture of both. Another option which will retain a classic look is to apply the elegance found in the lines and simplicity of calla lilies and tulips. Combine a few stems of either with a tall clear glass vase and you will have a bold statement softened with simple lines and color.

The Lapis Luxury theme is the black-tie affair modernized with an evening ceremony and receptions featuring either sit-down table service dining; however, a more budget friendly approach of cocktails and appetizers would also fit the fancy bill.

Regardless of the time of day, budget, venue, etc. the refined wedding trend featuring classic colors of white and blue, using the graceful and sophisticated blooms of callas, roses, hydrangea, and more, will make a luxurious and memorable statement on for your grand wedding affair.

Wedding Bouquet Trends: Modern Garden

Posted by Sat, Jan 17, 2015 @ 10:18 AM

describe the image

Every year, all the top wedding experts in flowers, cakes, dresses and more saturate the internet with new wedding trends. We don't have time to read on all the latest celebrity weddings, which colors are hot and which to avoid. Which is funny sometimes because in the end you make a theme your own. The trends are points of direction; from there, you do you!

Modern Garden is a flower wedding trend which came out in 2015. Relying on texture and loosely gathered florals, this theme has evolved over the years with more greenery and movement. This style is a keeper.

This striking bouquet above is an example of what you may find at a modern garden wedding.

DSC_9493

"Earthy", "textural", "natural", "vintage with a modern twist": these adjectives all fall under the description for a Modern Garden wedding. The colors will lend towards soft pastel earth tones; however bright and bold will also work beautifully in this category! Another description for this style floating around is "En Plein Air"; an open airy style wedding which ranges from shabby chic to down home country charm rustic.

What kind of flowers will we see in a garden style wedding? Large beautiful garden roses, callas, hypericum berries, succulent, and all sorts interesting textures you will find in billy balls, waxflower, scabiosa pods, liatris and more! The key word for florals and decoration throughout the ceremony and reception is texture.

If you are a member of the DIY revolution, love to incorporate shabby chic into your home, like creating crafty decor out of found objects and are prone to selecting patterns which shouldn't go together but do in the most interesting and eye-catching way, then this modern garden motif is definitely up your alley.

Expanding upon the color usage mentioned earlier this theme steps away from the glamour of silver and gold, introducing the more subtle metallic nature of copper. The rich and warm inviting hue is a perfect complement to "an afternoon of picking wildflowers" design and easy structure for centerpieces, accents, invitations, and beyond.

Since we're thinking about the open air, loose flowers, interesting artifacts and found containers, where does this leave the reception dining? Table settings are relaxed; creatively informal;, the menu is built from the growing trend in tasting and/or sampling stations; and the atmosphere is more of an ethereal rustic quality thanks to the twinkling scattered lights which are romantically reminiscent of stars.

moderngarden5.jpg

The beauty of a modern garden wedding, and most wedding themes really, is it is all about your interpretation of them. Want to have an informal and intimate ceremony and reception with bold colors, salvaged wood with string art, glitter gold containers and a gourmet taco sample station? You can! It's your wedding day. Make it your masterpiece.

Winter Precautions to Ensure Quality Floral Delivery

Posted by Wed, Jan 07, 2015 @ 03:16 PM

kellybadgetag-01-3
The holiday warmth has ebbed to your average gray winter day except..is that a snowflake? Did you wake up and find your vehicle buried under a fresh chilly blanket of snow? Just as you're planning to take an extra few minutes to prepare for inclement weather we are here at the shop preparing not only our arrangements but our drivers as well for the chilly temps and not so kind road conditions. After contemplating the great Snowpocalypse of 2014 at the beginning of the year and bad weather in general I decided to ask Sarah Gillespie what precautionary measures Gillespie Florists takes to ensure deliveries arrive safely to our customers.

driversFirst off, let's start with our courageous drivers. Outfitted with a company phone with gps and mapping capabilities, the drivers wear touch touch gloves, for texting and/or calling during the route; special winter cleats for ice, snow, and other slippery situations; and are encouraged to dress in layers. Why layers? It may be cold outside but the vehicles are kept at a safe temp for the precious cargo in back. Some routes take longer than others therefore jackets, gloves, hats, are bound to be shed during the journey only to be thrown back on at moment's notice when it's time to hop back out into the winter elements once the driver arrives at the next stop.

As soon as drivers reach their destination they are on the lookout for hazards such as iced-over sidewalks and snow obstructed paths to the delivery entrance. After a full day of jumping in and out of their trusty vans, traversing rain, snow, sleet, and/or whatever the mother nature has thrown at them for the day; drivers are expected back at the shop by dark. We want to secure the safety of both the floral arrangements and our delivery staff.

Speaking of safety, the delivery vehicles also receive special attention! Each one is outfitted with ice scrapers, a set of 2x6 boards, salt, and kitty litter in case there is a sticky situation with snow. These vans also get VIP treatment with bi-weekly checks for wiper fluid and unlimited washes at Crew Car Wash.

doublewrappedThe final piece to our precaution protocol is preparing our arrangements for delivery! Before the driver leaves the shop all the arrangements and bouquets must be suited up for their journey. We generally wrap flowers in cellophane before delivery however when temperatures drop, we start adding layers to protect our beautfiully designed pieces. If the temps are 20 and below, flowers will be double wrapped: a layer of tissue, then covered with cellophane. If temperatures are below zero, these double wrapped pieces will be covered with a blanket when they are being delivered to their final destination.

snow-1Gadgets, gizmos for shoes, vehicles chock full of supplies, layers upon layers of clothing, wrapping...sounds like a lot of extra work, doesn't it? It's worth it! Come snow, sleet, hail, or more, rest assured we'll be taking extra care to ensure the safety of these gorgeous pieces when they arrive at your door!

Too cold to stop by the shop? No worries!

Awestruck for Moonstruck Chocolate at Gillespie Florists

Posted by Wed, Nov 12, 2014 @ 07:56 AM

describe the imageI'm a big fan of chocolate; Strike that, HUGE fan of chocolate! Who isn't?  Believe it or not there are people out there who aren't that sweet on the smooth, delicious, melt-in-your mouth-properties of chocolate. It is completely fine to be a naysayer as there are some delectable confections of which I'm not too keen but today, friends, we are talking about chocolate. Not just any, but a new line which recently appeared on my doorstep combined with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. What better way to receive sweets than with a delightful floral display?  Take a guess which item lasted longer in my house. Are you curious on the brand of tantalizing truffle? Did I have you at the word "chocolate"? Yes? Awesome. Let's explore the luxurious line of "mmmm" inducing Moonstruck Chocolate Co.

moonstruckThe brief backstory on this chocolatier of artisan creations is the company originated in Portland, Oregon. They had a dream of making something beyond delicious and took it to the next level with intricate detail and design to their hand-crafted chocolates. Taking the utmost care and pride in their product, they use the finest ingrediants to create a one-of-a-kind sensational experience for not only your taste-buds, but for your eyes as well. After unwrapping the cellophane which encased two mysterious boxes I knew I was in for something excellent.
For starters, let's take a look at the sophistication in the package design. Metallic gold, dark navy, clean, simple graphics and font; my brain clicked with appreciation the box by itself!

moonstruckflowersAs the lid lifted from the box and the irresistable aroma hit and the battle of will versus want began. I didn't even have to taste these truffles to know they were going to be amazing; beyond amazing. A thin layer of metallic gold paper was all that stood between me and my tastebuds enjoying these edible works of art!  Finally, the paper was pulled back to reveal four delicate pieces of mouthwatering heaven. Ah, this was going to be tough choosing which one to sample first so I went to the description to narrow down my options from the dark chocolate collection: French Silk Chocolate Mousse, Raspberry Liqueur Truffle, Extra-Bittersweet Truffle, and the suprising Ocumarian Truffle! Tough choices there! I decided to save the Raspberry Liqueur Truffle to share with my husband (yes, I actually shared..but just one!) and went for the French Silk Chocolate Mousse. One small bite and I was hooked, line and sinker. A perfect combination of silky smooth center surrounded by rich dark chocolate with just a hint of bite. How on earth was I going to extend the enjoyment of these bite-sized delicacies without inhaling them all at once!

I tried desperately NOT to have another however my will was weak and two glorious bites later the Extra-Bittersweet Truffle disappeared. "I must save some for later, I must!" my brain encouraged. With the rich flavored ganache reverberating slight bitter tones on my tongue, I gently covered the remaining exquisitely decorated truffles; grabbed a stool and put the box in the back corner of the tallest cabinet while visions of sipping wine and nibbling on the extravagant Ocumarian Truffle danced in my mind.

flowers

A few hours later, my husband came home and I reluctantly shared my newfound love of Moonstruck Chocolate. After sharing the Raspberry Liqueur Truffle he had a better understanding why his half was a bit smaller than mine. Yes, I love this guy very much...however the siren call of dark chocolate is difficult to ignore.

Moral of the story is, Moonstruck Chocolate paired with a lovely bouquet is a wonderful surprise. Flowers make me feel special, loved, appreciated, adored, etc.; adding Moonstruck Chocolate to the equation? I was living in the lap of luxury; gazing at the beautiful blooms and enjoying decadent chocolates. It was a splendid experience I definitely recommend!
