Della Gillespie MendenhallIt was brought to my attention recently that someone used a picture of mine on their blog. This did not come as a surprise to me because this is not the first time it has happened. In recent years we have become more active in social media and the web in general. By becoming more active, we share more photos. Unique bouquet with a CD

There are pros and cons to everything we do, including posting images to the web.

Pros:

We have an opportunity to give our customers an exclusive look into the flower business. Customers have always been amazed at all the things their favorite florist can do and through social media, we get to share our best designs and ideas with countless followers every day! Our customers can see how crazy our store is on Valentine’s Day, see our intricate bridal bouquets, view an extravagant baby shower, shop our blinged out Prom corsages or even see a guitar made of flowers!

We also have an opportunity to network with fellow florists
SheilaWise designingand industry members.  We share our ideas, show a work in progress and get feedback or share what is happening in our shop on a particular day.  We even share funny moments at the store with a snapshot!

Perhaps the most valuable reason to post images to the web is to share our custom designs with customers so they can have confidence when they place their order in our hands.  We are proud to be a family owned, local florist, capable of artistry for every occasion.

Cons:

Our images, artistry and hard work can be copied.

The unique items that we make can be seen worldwide and can be copied. Someone can steal our pictures, place them on their own website, Facebook or blog and claim the images as their own.

Della Gillespie sharing picturesLook at the Pros and Cons. Do you know what I see? A lot more reasons to share my pictures than not. If you are a florist, photographer or individual who is concerned about sharing your photos on the web, think about all of the benefits and try not worry about the down side.

I look at my images as a resource for everyone.  There is nothing wrong with a customer taking a picture to another florist and asking them to make the same or similar item (we take it as a compliment)! I even accept other florists designing similar bouquets or products from our website, photographing it themselves then placing similar products on their own website. Each and every designer has their own style which will create variations within the finished product.  What aggravates me is when someone copies and pastes a picture from the web and claims the photo as their own unique design. The bottom line, give credit where credit is due.  Ask for permission or do the work yourself!

There are some things you can do to protect your images.
Santamary Florist and Greenhouses

Copyright your images. I learned you can only copyright pictures from the date of the copyright. Any images taken before that date are not protected. It is still up to you to track down any images that have been stolen and prosecute offenders.

Watermark your images. Some companies add their logo or website address to their photos. Usually, it covers most of the image but is transparent so you can still see the image.  Look to your right for a great example of watermarking.

Teleflora, Facebook and other sites are working hard to protect your images. If you have a Teleflora website, they make it very hard to copy the high resolution pictures to your computer. Facebook and other social media websites are also working to make it hard to copy pictures to your computer. This may give you some comfort when sharing your pictures!

If you see a beautiful picture that is not yours and you want to add it to your website or blog, simply ask the owner. When I am asked to share my images, I say yes!  I am flattered and ask that I am given credit or a link back to the original image.  Please give artistic credit to those who spent the time and resources to produce an image for everyone to enjoy!

"Beyond the Bouquet" Design Show - Part 2 - Prom Flowers

Posted by Fri, Mar 30, 2012 @ 06:16 PM

Della Gillespie Mendenhall  Della and SarahEveryone here at Gillespie’s loves to learn new things! As you can see in the picture, myself and Sarah sure do!Joyce Mason-Monheim Teleflora’s Indiana Unit hosted a design show called “ Beyond the Bouquet “ at Van’s Floral Products. Many of the Gillespie Employees went to this show and had a great time! The main focus of the show was actually on weddings but our teacher, Joyce Mason-Monheim also touched base on corsages that could work for Prom! So, We are doing a two part blog covering this great show. The first about Weddings and the second about Prom corsages and boutonnieres!Flower Necklace for Prom

Joyce offered up great ideas for corsages but also alternatives to corsages, like this necklace pictured here! This is a handmade necklace Joyce created out of wire, beading, orchids and a gardenia.  Funky Prom CorsageA necklace can be made for you to match your prom dress perfectly! If you already have a necklace but it needs a little something, You could bring it in and see if we can add flowers to it for you! We have tiaras you could add flowers to also, like the one pictured here.

Corsages don’t have to be just another Mother’s Day orchid. Joyce encouraged us to think outside the box by using flowers not typically seen in Prom corsages. Of course, the bling is important too!

Joyce made us tons of corsages and boutonnieres for us to look at and I want to share them with you so enjoy some pictures and this video of both the wedding flowers and Prom Flowers! Enjoy!

"Beyond the Bouquet" Design Show - Part 1 - Weddings

Posted by Thu, Mar 22, 2012 @ 04:33 PM

Sarah Gillespie fresh flower purseNothing like gathering a group of floral designers together for some inspiration!

I recently attended a floral design show highlighting trends in wedding and special event designs. After several successful Super Bowl events in February and the upcoming wedding rush, I felt that I could use a jump start into spring with some fresh new ideas!

As expected, the show did not disappoint! Collectively, it was decided that anything goes as far as color trends these days. It was mentioned that in tough economic times, consumers decorate in blues, greens and purples for comfort funky bridesmaid bouquet blueand calming effects, which has certainly been the color trend for the last few years. In the past twelve months, the trend is decidedly moving towards “nude” or “skin” tones, pushing the color palate to the warmer tones of peach, ivory, mocha and gold. This change could be signaling the end of the economic oppression felt by many consumers since 2009.Orange Calla Bridal unique

I particularly enjoyed the newest “bling” that has been introduced this year! Exiting baubles, beads, wire, rhinestones and buckles are sure to dazzle any bride to be. And let’s be fair- brides don’t get to have all the fun anymore. Prom décor can be dazzled with these creative additions, too!

Composite style bouquets are becoming more popular. This process takes a regular bloom of a focal flower (i.e. a rose) and making a larger impact by adding the individual petals of additional roses all around the central rose bloom. The final product is stunning!

Birds nest bridalAnother trend that is becoming more widely accepted is the use of fresh and permanent botanicals together to create luscious designs. The benefits of this new “marriage” are: keepsake items after your event, perfect color matching (especially shades of blue and purple), no seasonal constraints (peony, magnolia, forsythia) and no shipping constraints due to damage (lily of the valley, gardenia). The bouquets were masterfully designed in such a way that even the trained eye could not see the difference between fresh and permanent within the bouquet.

As the wedding season reaches its peak, it will be interesting to see if the color trends that are forecasted will indeed take the spotlight!

Why Do We Celebrate St. Patrick's Day?

Posted by Fri, Mar 09, 2012 @ 02:24 PM

Della Gillespie MendenhallPeople in the US love to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day every March 17th by wearing green, decorating with shamrocks and buying green specials such as green beer or green flowers. But do we know why we celebrate the holiday? Other than knowing it’s an Irish holiday, I couldn’t really tell you why this holiday came about or why it’s important to us.potatoes and flowers

We have St. Patrick’s Day to celebrate none other than Saint Patrick whose death was on March 17th in the fifth century (461). He is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. He was born in Roman Britain but was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He escaped but returned to Ireland and is credited for bringing Christianity to the people of Ireland. During the centuries following his death the myth surrounding his life became ingrained in the Irish culture. The best-known myth is the story that he explained the Holy Trinity using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock. Which is why we decorate so much with the color green and shamrocks for the holiday!

Erin go Brach flowersThis has been an observed holiday for over 1,000 years by the Irish! St. Patrick’s Day falls during the Christian period of Lent and the Lenten restrictions against the consumption of meat were waived on this day so people would dance, drink and feast to their hearts content! Although there is a lot of Christian religion behind the origins of St. Patrick’s Day, people from all walks of life celebrate the holiday.

Now that you know the history behind the holiday, hopefully you will be able to enjoy and appreciate it even more! You will certainly be able to impress your friends with a little history behind the holiday!

5 Easy Steps to Polyvore!

Posted by Fri, Feb 24, 2012 @ 04:44 PM

Della Gillespie MendenhallI am on the web all the time and have a number of sites and blogs I watch for new ideas and trends. One of which is Promflowers.blogspot.com. Recently they had a post about Pinterest and Polyvore. Though I like Pinterest, I really love, love, love Polyvore! If you are planning for your prom, THIS is the site to check out! You can find everything you need for Prom night and share it in one picture with your friends on any social network site! If you don’t know what you want to wear for Prom, Polyvore makes it easy to make several “sets” of options in different color schemes and styles which you can share with friends and ask their opinions.SoHo Prom look with flowers

How does Polyvore work? Here’s the 5 step process.

1. Create an Account. If you are already on Facebook, this will be really easy because Polyvore will let you sign up with Facebook. If not, it only takes a few minutes to create a new log-in.

2. Install Polyvore Clipper. Don’t worry, it’s easy! Go to This Page and click and drag the words “Clip to Polyvore” to your Bookmarks toolbar. There is even an instructional video on the page to help you get set up!

3. Import products that you like. For instance find a Prom dress online that you would like to create an entire look with. When you find your dress, click on the “Clip to Ployvore” bookmark and a small box will come up asking you to click on the image you would like to save. Click on the image and it will show up in the small box, ask you to select a price, tag it (i.e. dress) and check or un-check a box to quick share with friends! Click on the Save button and the box will let you know if that item was imported successfully.

My Prom Look with flowers corsage4. Create a Set. From the box you imported your first picture from, you are given the choice to continue “Clipping” or to “Create a Set”. Click on “Create a Set” and a new window opens to the Polyvore site in the Editor window. This is where you will see your newly imported picture and then there is a toolbar to the right where you can browse thousands of items other users have added to add to your set. If you are doing your own prom look, I would suggest searching for your shoes, necklace, earrings, corsage, dress, etc. If you don’t find what you are looking for on the Polyvore site, just get on the web, find it and import it. Just follow steps 3 & 4.

5. Share! Make sure that you have your favorite social networking site(s) connected so that Polyvore can automatically share with your friends. You may still want to share your sets directly on your best friend’s page so you can ask for their opinion! If you are on Pinterest, Make sure to “Pin” your set on your Prom ideas board!

Five Thrifty Valentine’s Day Ideas

Posted by Mon, Feb 13, 2012 @ 09:36 AM

Della Gillespie Valentine’s Day is coming soon and many people will be celebrating however there is often criticism regarding the cost for this day of romance. While we agree Valentine’s Day can elicit some cost; we also believe any occasion is what you make of it. We're big fans of saying "I Love You" in any way, on any budget. Here are five cost effective ways to let your Valentine know they are special!

flowerbunches.jpg
1. Wrapped Flowers
Go to your Local Florist and pick up wrapped flowers. Gillespie Florists offers a large selection of sunshine bouquets, deluxe sunshine and constantly run specials on flowers by the bunch! Want to select your own flowers? We also sell them by the stem!

When you purchase wrapped flowers at Gillespie Florists, the cost is less because we are not paying a designer to arrange them in a vase. You can save 20%-60% off your total cost. The only downside is that most florists will not deliver wrapped flowers.

More than likely your Valentine already has a vase at home. If not, containers can be easily purchased at the florist or you can get creative! Go to a local thrift store and find unique ways to vase your flowers with found containers such as mason jars, ceramic pitchers, cookie tins and more!

2. Personal Chef
We're not saying hire a personal chef (although you could). Surprise your sweetheart with the best recipe on earth! Anything made by you, because it's made with love. Sounds corny but picture a candlelit dinner for two complete with your finest display of cuisine artistry! Add extra flair to dîner chez vous with a bouquet or wrapped flowers from Gillespie Florists and creatively arranged by you!

mixedplants.jpg

3. Surprise Picnic
Surprise your valentine with a picnic at work! We love this idea because
A. Homemade lunch prepared with love, B. A break from the ordinary work day and C. A lovely romantic gesture. and D. Also a great opportunity to pick up a beautiful flowering plant for office decoration!

Cupidstreat.jpg
4. Cupid's Treats
Treat your valentine with coupons and/or a homemade gift basket! Buy a Valentine’s Day card and on a separate piece of paper create a “Coupon” that gives her a body massage from you or a promise to spend a day doing what ever she wants and put that with the card. Make sure what you are offering something your valentine would really like even if you don’t, that is part of what makes it a great gift! Have a basket around the home? Upgrade the coupon idea to a homemade gift basket. Surround the envelope with coupon enclosed with a few of their favorite things including chocolates, bath bombs, candles, etc!

valentinebouquetroses.jpg

5. Think Outside the Box!
Does your valentine love movies, long walks in the park, window shopping at the mall, reading, ice cream, petting animals? Pick up the latest of your true love's favorite movie genre, treats, games, and put aside time to do some of their favorite things! Find more ideas for what to do around Indy here!

So, lets get down to the brass tax. Valentine’s Day is about letting your significant other know you love and appreciate them! It's not about the expense, it's another day to express yourself! Don’t the day of romance get you down; you can have a great holiday with out emptying you wallet!

Local Wedding Trends: The Color Purple

Posted by Fri, Jan 27, 2012 @ 02:28 PM

Sarah GillespieSince September of 2011, I have seen a huge increase in the number of weddings featuring dark purple (often referred to as Lapis or Regency purple). In the world of flowers, there are not as many natural choices in this shade as compared to other colors (yellow, pink, white).

Purple and white bridal bouquet

However, with a little creativity, we have come up with some beautiful options for all of our “purple” brides to be!

Flowers that grow naturally in shades of deep purple include: Calla lily, carnations, stock, larkspur, gladiolus, statice, limonium, safora, liatris, dendrobium orchid, iris, hybrid delphinium and tulips. Not all of these options are cost effective or appropriate for all types of wedding styles. Therefore, it is necessary to get creative with how we design with the color palette to make a beautiful presentation.

Consider Designs using purple as the focal point.

lavender blue and white bridal bouquetSince purple is a dark color, it is often more balanced to use a lighter, contrasting color to supplement the deeper, more focal color. I would suggest using deep purple with softer shades of ivory/white, pale green, pale pink or lavender to create a design that highlights your thematic color choice, but does not overbear the design.

Add in purple embellishments.

Using jeweled pins in the center of contrasting colored flower blooms is a fun way to sprinkle your themed color throughout your bouquet. Another option is to use ribbon accents in your bouquet. This can be in the form of ribbon loops, bows or streaming ribbons. For the more adventurous bride, consider using feathers or tufts of tulle to create a little flair within your bouquet.Fresh and silk bridal bouquet

Incorporate artificial flowers into your fresh flower design.

This may seem a little odd at first, but if Mother Nature does not provide what your heart desires, skillful hands probably can! Last year, one of our brides wanted to incorporate purple anemone into her bridal bouquet during a season in which the anemone is off-crop. Her wish was our command! Beautiful artificial anemone is shown here in this stunning bouquet of fresh cut blooms!

Don't Make Valentine's Day a Labor of Love.

Posted by Tue, Jan 24, 2012 @ 10:39 AM

Pat Gillespieinside drop ship flower boxIn February of 2011, I was listening to the radio a couple of days before Valentine Day and heard the advertisement of an online floral company. The commercial was encouraging consumers "not to wait in long lines and pay the high prices at a traditional florist, go to their website or call toll free and send two dozen roses for just $39.99 and they'll include a free vase and chocolates too!" I thought to myself, "sure, a cheap plastic vase, a tiny box of chocolates and short roses delivered in a box, without hydration or conditioning, shipped directly to the recipient’s home or office, turning a gift of love, into a gift of labor and disappointment!” In the end, the consumer will have spent at least $60.00 (which includes the $20 shipping fee) for sub-standard product and possibly have a negative impression of giving flowers as a gift in the future.

Valentine Red Dozen rosesWhat online flower companies want the consumers to forget is that local florists are as close as your telephone or internet connection. The cost might be a little higher, but the consumer is supporting the local economy and being provided a superior product and service. When customers walk into our store, call or visit our website, they will see our products and interact with our staff. Our friendly staff takes the time to help select the perfect gift to express the emotion of the occasion. Our designer then transforms flowers into an expression of love and splendor to ensure wonderful memories for years to come. Our delivery driver transports the gift to a home or office to create delight and excitement for all to see.
