March Birth Month Flower - Daffodil & Jonquil

KSBADGE_25-02

As winter fades and spring begins to peek through, March welcomes blooms that feel like pure sunshine. The Daffodil and Jonquil are this month’s birth flowers — both carrying beautiful messages of hope, renewal, and love — and they’re some of our favorite early signs of the season here at Gillespie Florists.

🌼 Daffodil (Primary Flower)

Often called the “trumpet of spring,” daffodils are among the very first flowers to bloom — sometimes even pushing through lingering frost. Their bright, trumpet-shaped centers and star-like petals instantly lift a room and signal that warmer days are on the way.

Daffodils symbolize optimism, joy, resilience, and prosperity. Because they return year after year, they’re closely tied to renewal and fresh beginnings — making them a meaningful choice for March birthdays and spring celebrations. In Victorian floriography, they carried the sentiments “you are the only one” and “joy returns.” They are also the national flower of Wales and are worn on St. David's Day (March 1st).

In the Flower Shop:
We often feature daffodils in our spring bulb gardens — mixed planters filled with seasonal favorites that can be enjoyed indoors now and later planted outdoors. It’s a gift that keeps giving, blooming beautifully this season and returning year after year once planted in the garden.

Care & Planting Tips:

  • Keep bulb gardens in bright, indirect light and water when the soil feels dry to the touch.
  • Once blooms fade and the weather warms, bulbs can be planted outdoors in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
  • Allow the foliage to yellow naturally before trimming back — this helps the bulb store energy for next spring’s bloom.

Daffodil bulbs are traditionally planted in the fall, but gifting them in a spring bulb mix allows you to enjoy their color now and establish them in your landscape for seasons to come.

🌼 Jonquil (Secondary Flower)

A variety of daffodil, the jonquil features smaller clustered blooms and a sweet fragrance. It represents affection, desire, and the return of love — a lovely sentiment for celebrating meaningful connections this season.

Symbolism by Color

  • Yellow: Happiness and friendship
  • White: Purity and clarity
  • Orange: Energy and enthusiasm
  • Pink: Admiration and uniqueness

March flowers are all about fresh starts and bright possibilities — and nothing says “spring is here” quite like a cheerful bulb garden ready to bloom again next year.
